So - the Virus creeps nearer to my home. The last positive person is only 105 km from my home. I remember I did say to my hubby at the beginning this could - no - will be a pandemie. And China will for sure not reveal the true dimension of it. It seems I was right about that.
I also think that the epidemic flu has the much higher death toll - difference - you can do something about. So I'm not panicking. If I am worried then more about the economical world status. Financial markets are made out of air, fragile and a virus like this will surely cause some people to gamble at high stakes. A lot of economy already breaks down, cause China is a world global market.
Whats your opinion ?

To be honest I'm not sure what to think of all this. I agree that seasonal influenza also results in many deaths. And yeah, the difference is that seasonal influenza can be prevented since there are vaccines available for people who are at high risk. This is not the case for the Corona virus. The fact that it has a really long incubation period isn't helping either. And knowing that you are already able to spread the virus even if you're not showing any symptoms. This of course makes it possible for the virus to spread at a much faster rate than seasonal influenza.
But to read about some of the drastic measures that are taken to battle the virus is surreal. Sealing off entire villages or neighbourhoods. Government here's already saying that it is also something that maybe be done here.
There's a project I backed on Kickstarter. The creator posted an update saying that the gas and electricity supply to the industrial district has been turned off to force the factories to shut down. To continue operations each factory must report the health situation and travel records during the last month from every employee.
This is definitely not helping the economy.

I would say its a stupid idea. You will make the already existing paranoia even worse.
About closing off communities/villages - this could happen here, too. But since I have a rather big basement and always have some water, rice, noodles and crispbread stored I think I'm good whatever comes.
EDIT.: 9 km from my home they closed all of sudden a Biotech organisation as a ** precautionary measure for the time being**. It could be someone did met a person from Sweden which is positive ...
well - I thought its paranoid, but now are 3 others infected . All of them did attend to a bussiness meeting in Munich. Looks like there was someone who spread the virus.

There are many times where I think the world's gone mad.
Oh well, looks like we won't all die from climate change...
This reminds me of all the panic about the Mexican flu in 2009. That one turned out to be pretty mild as, no worse than seasonal influenza. There was one "expert" virologist here who kept saying that this virus was a really nasty one. This made our government purchase 34 million vaccines. More than twice as much as the population of the Netherlands back then (16.5 million people). Why???
Later it also turned out that the virologist actually was a shareholder of a company that does clinical diagnostic testing and accelerates market entry of new drugs, vaccines and anti-virals... No doubt having the government buy this many vaccines was also in his interest.
In any case we now officially have the first case of COVID-19 here as well.

Unfortunally we have the seasonal influenza just right now, too. I'm just a bit worried about my Mom - in her age and without the vaccine ( you know old people are stubborn ) against the flu she is vulnerable. People here reacting with hoarding stuff - my Sis told me she saw today one with at least 20 packs of frozen spinach Oh well - humanity and insanity are going hand in hand

I can imagine that you're worried. I'm worried about my parents as well, although they're not as stubborn as your mom. They did get the vaccine for the seasonal flu. Hoarding maybe, but it could also be that your sister saw Popeye the Sailor Man One could always wear something like this in order to prevent getting infected O_o

Oh yes - looks very practical. And NO - It can't be Popeye - he eats spinach out of a can NEVER frozen My opinion is you will go best with rationality and a sense of humor. I agree with some specialists that it will spread like the seasonal flue. Using the normal hygiene measures and avoid to be in spots with many people should be enough. But oh well - we will see.

But maybe the store ran out of canned spinach? Or maybe Popeye prefers frozen spinach nowadays since apparently it tastes better than the canned stuff?
Yes, I agree that the shield thingy looks very practical lol I've been wondering how it works? I mean you can't go anywhere with it. Imagine getting on the bus wearing one of those things. If you have 12 people wearing something like that the bus will be packed.
Or when you go grocery shopping... How on earth are you going to pick up your groceries from the shelves? Because it looks like your arms are pretty much blocked. Also how are you going to move through the store without knocking anything over? I'd feel like a bull in a china store (no pun intended) in one of those things.

this vision let me laugh really hard. This is a very interesting Map my Sister did send over Skype to me. Map

Interesting map, true. We can see that it's obvious that the virus originated in China. From there you'd think that the virus might spread out fast in neighbouring countries, but seemingly the only country getting the bulk of it is Japan. What also stands out is why there are so many cases in Italy and Iran. Hmmm O_o
Btw there was a whole program dedicated to the Corona virus on national TV here on Thursday. I didn't see it, because I was working. But here's a funny thing. Our minister for medical care was handed a note during the broadcast saying that we now had a case of the Corona virus in the Netherlands. Some insiders claim that the government already knew about this the day before. But what better way it is to make it public in a special broadcast like this. You know... for extra effect: Hollywood Style. Bah!

mmhhh.. Italy isn't very suprising for me. Asian People love Italy and the Alps. Iran I don't know - probably bussiness.
But Korea has far more infected then Japan.
Oh well - politicians always try to talk people down despite hard facts. Announcing this in Hollywood style is typical, too. 3 weeks before they did talk here like this Virus has nothing to do with Germany, all is in control , no one need to fear anything, there will be no pandemie.
Its just good for a laughter what they say and do. For me it feels they think all citizens are dumb and deaf.

Yeah, forgot about Korea, but like Japan it seems more logical that the number of cases would be high since those countries are relatively close to China and it seems logical that there is a lot of traveling back and forth between those countries. But still, Italy and Iran? Usually people from that far away visit more places than just one. You know... those tours where they visit 10 countries in 5 days or something are quite popular, so you'd think there would be a larger number of people infected in other European countries.
Also a lot of countries do business with the Chinese, so it still seems odd that there are so many infected in Iran.

You are right - its really a bit odd.
In Germany the virus infected people now doubled in between 48 hrs. to 117. A lot is about the damn carneval where the infected could spread this thing happily in large masses ....HELAU
For me I decided to go only 1x time to grocery this week and avoid to give people a shake hands - which is anyway a useful tool to prevent the flu.

10 known cases here at the moment and today our minister of healthcare announced that one hospital now has an admission stop and is no longer allowing people to visit the patients. I feel bad for the hospital patients (especially childre). Sometimes visitors can help a lot to brighten your day. And since hospital staff these days hardly has time anymore to properly look after the patients I've seen plenty of people who visited a relative to look after them.
I don't think I'll be changing my routines. I'll go to the store when I need to. I had to laugh, because one news site had like 15 articles about the Corona virus on the front page and further down the page an article on how to stop the panic from spreading. Ehrm... maybe by posting less articles?
And also: there are 44 women in my country whose first name is Corona. One of them has pleaded to use the name Covid-19 from now on. She is even considering to change her name now. I can imagine why.

I did see in TV that the Americans drinking less Corona beer can you believe it ? Changing my routine is easy - I was mostly going only 2 times a week to grocery. Making a plan for eating I do anyway - so I just plan some days more ahead I mean we have directly under my nose ( 9 km from my home ) some infected al ready- so you never know. I can understand that hospitals closing for visitors, but I agree also with you it is a drastic decision, especially for sick kids.
