Tup: So, as I was saying before in the Star Wars topic: Your PC definitely has a respectable age You mentioned the motherboard, CPU and RAM haven’t changed since, so I assume you only replaced the GPU over time and maybe some storage? My previous PC (an Alienware system) got replaced by my current one after 4 years. The one before that: an Intel Pentium system lasted for a decade at least. But at that time I wasn't really using it to play games. I suppose I could have made the Alienware system last longer by upgrading it, but I think it had its limitations and at that time building my own PC seemed like something to take my mind off of things. A bit of a challenge too since I’d never done this before. So, it’s been 3 years since I built this and it’s still running. I’ve had no major issues, apart from a sound issue a while ago, which I managed to solve. I feel proud In any case at some point my current system will no doubt need an upgrade, so a bit of orientation won’t hurt. Waiting for the next generation of NVIDIA’s RTX GPU’s seems like a plausible thing to do. Assuming they’ll be compatible with my current components. Current build: Intel Core I7-6700K, 4,0 GHz processor Asus ROG Maximus VIII Hero Alpha mainboard (Socket 1151) 32 MB Corsair Vengeance LED DDR4 3000 MHz RAM EVGA NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 SC Gaming ACX 3.0 Corsair H100i V2 water cooler Corsair RM850X, 850W power supply.

32 MB of RAM eh? This time one should build a machine that is clearly faster than next gen consoles. Since they will have 8 core Zen 2 based CPUs and rather beefy GPUs (around Radeon RX 5700 XT or faster with apparently hardware accelerated ray tracing). I'd aim for >8 core CPU. Either >10 core from Intel or >12 core from AMD. Zen 3 should be really nice next year while Intel has been releasing Skylake over and over again while being stuck at 14nm manufacturing process. 32GB of ram should be good choice and when it comes to GPU I'd definitely pick one with hardware accelerated ray tracing since it will definitely get used since consoles will have some kind of hardware for it. How beefy depends on what resolution one will use.

Wasn't planning on replacing my whole PC just yet. If it was falling apart maybe

The point is that quad core CPUs will soon be obsolete in gaming. Current gen consoles have really, really slow CPUs while that is going to change next year. Quad core anything will be really weak against 8 core Zen 2. One games start using all that power it will be really painful. That being said, in my case the biggest bottleneck is my GTX 1070. It can't even remotely push 165 frames per second at 1440p in new games. My CPU isn't the main bottleneck but it is still starting to cause issues. Mainly frame times are all over the place in games that use multiple cores efficiently. I remember when dual cores (without SMT/hyper threading) hit the wall...
I'll be upgrading my GPU next year (assuming that new gen cards will come out) and then check the CPU situation. I might wait another year to see how Intel can respond (competition might cause price wars in 2021). Upgrading next year would mean no slot in upgrades since transition to DDR5 will happen next. It would be impossible to reuse DDR4 and motherboard.

It's just impossible to keep up with the technology.
I'd upgrade my GPU and CPU (depending on whether it'd be compatible with my mainboard), but I'd like to get a few more years out of the rest of my system... So far it's been performing well enough for my purposes and liking at 4K resolution. For me it's just not worth it to replace my whole system again after 4 or 5 years. It cost plenty enough to build it, so it'll have to do for the time being. Ultimately for me the real point is if next gen Intel CPU's will be compatible with my mainboard... I figure I could still go back to 2560 x 1440 resolution if push comes to shove...
But as you said your rig's basically 8 years old, which is quite respectable in my opinion. And at that age I feel it's more logical to replace a complete system.
Makes you wonder if it'd be better to buy a console?

Hmmm... There's a weird issue I'm having with my mom's PC. It will no longer boot (even in safe mode). It just hangs up and won't start Windows.
At first I thought there might be an issue with the hard drive, so I ran chkdsk to scan the drive for errors and possibly fix them. No errors were found. The System Repair function's not helping either. Afterwards the PC still won't boot. And I can't restore the last backup either.
I fear that the only option I have left is to reinstall Windows.

Yup, it's Windows 10. Pretty much went through all of those options in that tutorial video already. But nonetheless thanks for sharing.
Looks like I'll be reinstalling Windows. Thankfully, not too much will be lost since she recently did make a backup of her documents etc.

We had Tuesday a Blackout around 1 hr. - it was very stormy so I suppose that was the reason. I was working on PC and now I have a CPU Fan Error. I hope I could fix it in BIOS .. its ennerving always to start the PC 2 times new. Could you fix your Mom's problem ?

Annoying. Hope it wasn't too much of an inconvenience other than the CPU Fan error. Like having the contents of your freezer get unfrozen.
So I'm assuming that when you boot your PC it now gives you the CPU fan error and refers to BIOS. Then upon exiting BIOS the PC boots up again, but this time without the CPU fan error? And you have to go through this whole process everytime you start up your PC?
I've been working, so I haven't had the chance to fix my mom's problem yet. I've downloaded and created the Windows 10 installation media on a USB drive, so I'm good to go for a clean install.

Well I did fix it in the BIOS Settings - so it starts smoothly again All other things are fine - thx god. My sister had a damaged satellite dish ( TV and stuff not sure this is the right word for it ). Maybe I need to help her with paying the bill for the repair. They will charge 50€ !!! per hrs + the new LNB + driving to her+ using a long ladder for the climb. So I suppose it will be expensive - still not as expensive to get a new thing and let them put them in space. The storm was rather heavily last Tuesday

Ah, I'm glad it's running smoothly again. Guess BIOS was a little bit upset after the sudden loss of power Sorry to hear about your sister's satellite dish. Expensive stuff to get it repaired when things are adding up. But as long as it's still more economical to repair it than to get a whole new one... This makes me glad I have a cable connection. If anything is broken (cable modem or media box) they'll replace it free of charge. Although last time my media box carked they tried to offer me an upgrade with more tv channels and better quality lol. But cable isn't always an option I suppose plus it might be more expensive. If only I could get a subscription for Internet and Telephone only, because I stopped watching TV a long time ago.

Well, fixed my mom's PC, by reinstalling Windows again. That went pretty smoothly, but I'd forgotten how much of a pain in the behind it was to install the printer Eventually got that working too, so now she's all set again. Recently I started having a severe issue with my monitor... The cat has now decided that he loves to lie down directly in front of it, so it's getting really hard for me to get things done or play any games. And removing him is not without any risk lol He actually got me pretty good a few days ago. There was a bit of standoff in my backyard between him and another cat I've seen around in this neighbourhood. So there was lots of hissing and growling at each other lol I wanted to make sure they didn't get into a fight, so I went outside and when the other cat saw me he started moving away towards the gate. Smokey chased him until the cat turned around again. More hissing and growling and in the end the other cat fled by crawling underneath the gate and escaping. Smokey wanted to follow him, but I figured I'd better stop him from doing that, so I wanted to pick him up and take him inside. Picking up a cat that's in full attack mode is not a very good idea...

In addition to lying down right in front of my monitor when I'm working on something or gaming Smokey has also made it a priority to knock down my speakers O_o It was getting kind of annoying, so now I've decided to but a new set of speakers. The ones I'm planning to order weigh about 8 kg's a piece, so let's see Smokey knocking those down lol The old speakers (2 desktop speakers and a subwoofer), which I once got as a freebie were pretty decent, but it was getting rather annoying having to pick them up all the time. I'm really not sure what's gotten into that cat recently, because he hardly ever knocked things over hmmm...
The new speakers don't come with a subwoofer, so I guess this also means less cables
